WOMEN CAN TEND BAR IN NEW DEHLI

Thomas Riggins

Yesterday it was reported by Reuters that the Indian Supreme Court has ruled as unconsitutional a law forbidding women to work as bar tenders in the Indian capital of New Delhi [what about the rest of India?].

The City had argued for the law on the basis that "women needed to be protected from the bad behavior of drunken New Delhi men." How considerate of the city fathers. How about enforcing a law against public drunkenness and another to make it illegal to serve drinks to drunks.

It does'nt look good for men that they want laws that discriminate against women on the basis that men can't behave themselves. It's true that men can't behave themselves, but that's something for men to work on, not to deny the women their rights under the Indian constitution.
